Pushing the State of the Art
To your left is an image of the monolithic mirror telescope which today has a facility adaptive-secondary, multiple laser guide star beacons, and which produces cutting-edge research in the worlds of optics, space surveillance, and astrophysics. This all seems secondary nowadays and the image is just that, but then this was the undone and the undo-able. Over the course of a decade of research, each of these technologies saw what the astronomers call first-light and sometimes to our dismay, only after a couple of attempts. Today the telescope stands as a powerful cutting-edge instrument and we are proud to say that many of our talented scientists and engineers spent the better part of their lives to push this envelope.
